Something Strange

In most of the cases when you listened any successful person talking about how he made it big mostly in the Indian context, they talk about how difficult things were and the hardships they had to endure. I just wonder if it is the success they are complaining about, or is it the fact that they now have an audience who is willing to listen to them. Are they talking about the success or they are complaining as they find people now to listen to them.

Take for example, the story of Infosys; they say when they started, it took them 2 years to obtain a computer, 2 or 3 years to get a telephone connection, it took 10 days for release of foreign currency from RBI… and so on… is it the success they are talking about or are they listing down their cribs!

What is more important and useful to me would be, how they managed without a computer and a telephone for 2 years, how they overcame all the obstacles… they never talk about that. I think they just want to vent out their frustrations as they find people to listen to them.

Not every one would agree with me, maybe I sound a little weird , but then….that’s the way I am !!! The other day , one of the big shots in my Unit was talking about how he started his professional life in the organization. He apparently came to the Bangalore office late in the night and to his dismay, found a very small office and no accommodation facilities. He then had to sleep on a table in the only conference room present in that little office. And hence began his long and arduous journey to the heights that he has achieved now. The Unit head of the very same little organization, which is a name to reckon with in the IT circle of the world.

I just don’t find the point in it, is he dumb or what, why did he go to the office late in the night to report? Ok, let’s say he does not know anyone in Bangalore, fine, he should have gone there and then find out from the security and rent a room in a hotel. Why should he sleep on a table, the only thing that comes to my mind is, maybe he is too stingy to spend his money and thought he can save some money by sleeping in office table.

I just wonder that once we Indians make it big, we just discuss our frustrations, as we find a platform where we find people who are there to listen to us; something we missed during the years of struggle and hardship.

I think they just miss one point…

No one dies a virgin; Life fucks every one!!

I would say it could be just another perspective to look at things... may be they wanna tell how despite all these hardhips, they made it big and that in turn can encourage a lot of people!!!

Ur unit head was late to report at office but do u know the reason behind it... why was he late? It could be due to some unavoidable circumstances and he may not have enough money to rent out a room or may be he was saving money for some purpose... I think the other side of the story should also be heard to have a better perspective on this! :o)

at any point of time they should talk about how they did it.. till date they never talked about it..

one can read about GE or Dell story how they made it.. one can never find some thing about Indian success story..

I dont find the boosting is for others rather it looks boosting about themself.. i made it big even after such things.. my point here is, i know you made it big and i just want to know how made it.

being infoscion seems to be an issue here...picture in others plate seems rozy to all....dont forget it was the IT only that made India shining and also made u and me to go in hotels and afford them...coming down to the point...yes seems we as Indians like the -veness.........we want something bad to happen hero and then her should come out with flying colors....c rangeela Aamir leaves Urmila and then gets her back.....tell who will leave her first of all.....ask top shots if they can leave .....the answer will be no. The state of Indians will remain the same...people dont want to work in India stating all fabric reasons and in other nations they will do all types of work.....yes we need to change and need to start looking at things in diff perspective.

to every man his troubles seem bigger than the other person's... in essence most ppl are selfish (or as some put it "ambitious")... so are u and so am i... if u are stingy with the company's resources then the senior management will like u and promote u to Unit head :D so better learn to be stingy like this unit head of urs ;)

basically its ppl looking at what they were and where they were and how all that changed... dont worry if u are stingy enuf then u mite probably be able to boast abt it sometime :D

being in the same company and same unit..we are looking things at different point of view.. i do have respect for infy founders as well as the Unit head..

i would love to know form all the successful people whatever the problems they faced.. how did they overcome..

let's say among our.. if someone thinks big.. and start off from here.. most of the conditions will be same, its just how they started and over came there problems.. will make someone reach the top...

I am interested to listen to successful people as i can learn something out from there life.. what is the point for me to just listen to the problems they faced.. i would as well try to solve the problems i will face.. if i am on that path..

i personally feel its a waste of time to just listen to the problems.. one should gain from others experience.

that point i wanted to drive is that.

C'mmon .. What can be the success formulae for making lemonade ??
Work of the S/W engg is not diff in my pov.

Many a wise man before me and after me have made a kill talking about the essentiality of Applied Intelligence, Skill, Hardwork, Dedication, Patience, Commitment to succeed and that precious little Killer Instinct ...... gr8 many book shelves stand proof.

Now the wise man made a killing ...out of your belief or his is sumthing to ponder about !!!

Well...i believe that to the end of the world there will always be wise men and their believers.
Being successfull must be all about making sure you have an audience .... :))

Well... I understand your point thoroughly. "More than the goal it's the means that is employed to acheive it that's important"

But in this context it may not be completely relevant. If founders @ Infosys struggled for getting a telephone connection, understanding the means is unnecessary now.

Moreover, given a chance, who doesn't like talkin
about their little SOP stories and adventures. Many a time, even we are subject to such an ordeal(not sparin the one I've been put through to do this ;))...

So, I guess preferntial hearing is the only way out...

I'd prefer bein anonymous on this.

my point there was without telephone.. how did they manage the only client they had.. maybe they have done ISD, but how come they managed the communication from client side. Without a computer how did they manage to code and deliver? or is it that for first 2 or 3 years only the company was there but no client or work was started? this are some of the points which are interesting to me and what is there out of box thinking which helped them to come to this stage form that position.

and i agree about your preferntial hearing point..

There is a thin line of difference between boosting and boasting. Problems/Hurdles faced in the past can be shared to showcase that young generation is staying in a better environment and to boost their confidence in doing better things in the best way than what has been achieved so far. Certain problems can be narrated more in detail and the way it was handled/solved/deciphered can give clear message to the audience and boost their morale. Their sufferings/emotions during that time, mistakes/learnings they realized added to such speech will even attract poor listeners even. It may not be very much relevant to the problems quoted in one liners like Company without telephone, Slept in the conference room etc. But, there is always a chance of sharing good/bad experience/learings for many kind of routine/rare problems that are solved tactically related to business/client/people/competitor etc. Addresses of great leaders/businessman/higher executives do include such kind of personal experiences some as one liners and some in details based on it's vitality and it's relevance to the context. But, few people at higher level do practice the habit of their addresses with only their [standar] past achievements or heroism [as like one slider resumes] because it is not only that it boosts none or give inputs to anyone.. rather it just makes few audience to take up that style for their meetings when they grew.

At the end, it's just all about the art of converting their swageering talk to give some food for thought which should boost the self-confidence of the audience atleast for some time.

Having audience is successful. But, the more the active listeners in that group, the greater is the success of any address.
